Introducing our breeds
Australian Shepherd Dog
The Australian Shepherd dog is a medium-sized and active breed that is known for its intelligence and agility. Originally bred as herding dogs, they are highly skilled at various tasks and excel in activities such as obedience, agility, and herding trials. Australian Shepherds have a double coat that is weather-resistant, with a dense undercoat and a longer, straight or slightly wavy outer coat. They come in a variety of colors, including blue merle, black, red merle, and red, often with white markings and copper points. These dogs are highly energetic and require plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Australian Shepherds are also known for their loyalty and devotion to their families, making them excellent companions and family pets. With their striking appearance and versatile nature, Australian Shepherds have gained popularity as both working dogs and beloved pets.
The Rough Collie
The Rough Collie is one of the UK’s oldest breeds with the first Breed Standard drawn up in 1881. Originating in the hills of Scotland and Wales, the Rough Collie was used as a shepherding dog, primarily working with sheep and cattle.
When dog shows were first held in 1860, there were classes scheduled for sheepdogs, then in 1873 classes for Collies were scheduled and the popularity of the breed grew from there amongst working people and the gentry alike. Queen Victoria first saw a Collie around 1860 and with her patronage, the breed became even more popular.
It was in the 1940 when the Rough Collie was thrown into the modern spotlight with a string of Lassie films hitting the big screen, with Lassie Come Home in 1943, featuring a very young Elizabeth Taylor. This was followed by the Lassie TV series, the original aired in 1954 and amounted to a staggering 591 episodes. The Rough Collie by now was a familiar sight to all.
The Rough Collie makes the perfect family pet for many reasons. Their sensitive nature, taken from their herding heritage, means they bond easily with their family and will be forever watchful and protective of them. They are affectionate and playful and have a reputation for being great with children.
They are an intuitive breed, and highly intelligent and will recognise the sound of the family car returning home or a family member’s footsteps. They are energetic and fun and capable of going for long family walks or competing in agility but are equally happy curled up with their family.
The Collie is a relatively healthy and long-lived breed, with many reaching to 12 years and beyond.

About me
Here's more about Takhisis, a small hobby kennel of Rough Collies and Australian Shepherd Dogs based in Lincolnshire, UK.
I've had Rough Collies since I was 10 years old. In 1994 I bought my first show dog and it started from there. In 1996, I bought my second and her descendants still live on here at Takhisis.
In 2021, I decided to add an Australian Shepherd to the family. Who knows where this journey will take us, but we are having fun together.
In 1998 I started judging and am now approved to award CCs in Rough and Smooth Collies.
